Poul Ruders

Born 1949 in Ringsted, Denmark, Ruders largely developed as a self-taught composer. Although he studied organ and music theory, his com-positional language emerged through independent exploration and a deep engagement with the history of music. From the outset, he demonstrated an unusual ability to absorb diverse influences while forging a highly personal musical identity. 
Ruders first gained widespread attention during the 1980s with a series of orchestral and chamber works that revealed a composer equally fasci-nated by the expressive possibilities of modernism and the enduring power of tonal reference.
