“Absolutely sensational”: The clarinetist blew everyone away
“Wow! At a time when he already seems to be everywhere in Danish musical life, Jonas Frølund burst through as soloist in Carl Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto. Frølund delivered a truly outstanding performance as soloist in Nielsen’s concerto.
Clarinetist Jonas Frølund, who is here, there, and everywhere these days, had agreed to step in as soloist in Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto after another soloist had canceled. The result was absolutely sensational. Flexible, dazzlingly virtuosic, and with the freedom to communicate as though the concert were a piece of theater, he brought the music into a new age.
Fischer is a world-class conductor. When he’s not in Copenhagen, he’s leading the great orchestras in Vienna, New York, and beyond. With extra players in the ranks, he drew from the Danish Entertainment Orchestra a sweep and a drive worthy of the Vienna Philharmonic. Wow!
Fischer had asked Jakob Weber, on the snare drum, to sit opposite the soloist. This made the musical dialogue and confrontations between the two crystal clear.
It was a fantastic concert where the energy and Frølund’s tremendous performance completely overshadowed any small imperfections”. Thomas Michelsen, Politiken (Denmark)
