Carl Nielsen: The Ultimate Solo Piano Collection

Three hours, 26 minutes and 28 seconds. That is the precise duration of Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s complete piano output, here undertaken by Danish pianist Rikke Sandberg. It must be said that Nielsen could hardly have wished for a better interpreter. Across three compact discs, the composer’s music unfolds like a diary spanning his entire life.

The music of Carl Nielsen (1865–1931) is not particularly well known in our part of the world and, with a few honourable exceptions, is rarely encountered on concert platforms. This album, too, will probably find its way mainly into the collections of enthusiasts, which is a great pity. Nielsen’s music is not usually the kind one falls in love with at first hearing. Its harmony travels through constant modulations, especially in the later works, creating a certain sense of instability for the listener. Yet it remains strongly melodic, albeit in a highly distinctive way. It frequently tends towards polyphony, at times carrying an almost Bach-like flavour. Elsewhere, it builds monuments of dense chords spanning the entire range of the instrument, as in the Symphonic Suite, Op. 8.

A genuine pearl is the cycle Piano Music for Young and Old, Op. 52, in which the composer adopts an almost elementary piano texture, keeping both hands within five-finger positions that remain unchanged throughout each individual piece, many of which last less than a minute. These are not, however, merely instructional works, although some could certainly serve that purpose, but rather a form of compositional camouflage, in which the musical content is often more serious and the interpretative demands considerable.

One exceptional work that, in my opinion, deserves far greater attention from pianists around the world is the Theme with Variations, Op. 40. This eighteen-minute composition not only offers the performer numerous opportunities for virtuoso display, but its compositional quality also places it alongside many much more frequently performed works by the great masters. The shorter Chaconne, Op. 32, is no less impressive. The collection also includes numerous smaller pieces composed throughout Nielsen’s life.

The third disc presents the composer’s piano arrangements of works written for the theatre, in other words, incidental music. While listening to excerpts from music composed for dramas by Danish writers, The Mother by Helge Rode, Hagbarth and Signe by Adam Oehlenschläger, two plays by Holger Drachmann (Snefrid and Sir Oluf He Rides), and The Parents by Otto Benzon, I was conscious of the absence both of the stage action and of the orchestral sound for which, with few exceptions, the music was originally conceived. If Grieg’s music for Peer Gynt represents an unsurpassable ideal, perhaps only Nielsen’s music for Aladdin by A. Oehlenschläger is capable of standing beside it. Although the orchestral colours are absent, the inventiveness of these six sections, the Oriental Festival March and five dances, more than compensates.

The quality of the Steinway piano and the album’s recorded sound are magnificent, as is almost invariably the case with OUR Recordings. For me, pianist Rikke Sandberg is an absolute revelation. I find her touch enchantingly lyrical and colourful; her pianissimos are utterly ethereal and her fortissimos dramatic without ever becoming harsh. Her technique is entirely flawless and precise, and her pedalling perfectly controlled. Her musical expression remains refined under all circumstances and is never dull. Her interpretation is wholly at the service of the composer: she adds nothing superfluous and takes nothing away from what is written.

It is regrettable that we do not hear such an outstanding performer in concert in our country. If her aim with this album was to broaden awareness of Denmark’s national composer, Carl Nielsen, she has succeeded completely, at least in my case. Hopefully, this recording will also awaken the interest of concert programmers and other pianists, not only in the composer but also in this exceptional pianist.

Je-li Griegova hudba k Peer Gyntovi nedostižný ideál, snad pouze Nielsenova hudba z Alladina (autor A. Oehlenschläger) je schopna mu sekundovat. Byť orchestrální barvy absentují, nápaditost v těchto šesti částech (Orientální slavnostní pochod a pět tanců) to kompenzuje.

Technika zcela bezchybná a přesná, pedalizace perfektně kontrolovaná. Jan Dusek, July 29th, 2026
