“Prince and murderer,” the Italian Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa is said to have written on his calling card. In addition to murdering his wife and her lover, Gesualdo composed about 100 so-called madrigals, melancholy choral pieces written in a style that was quite avant-garde for its time.
The Danish composer Peter Navarro-Alonso (b. 1973) has created a compelling work based on some of these songs, in collaboration with the English conductor Paul Hillier and the Danish violinist Christina Åstrand. The piece has been recorded by the Danish-English vocal ensemble Theatre of Voices and the Danish Ensemble Stralo. Its title is In flagrante delicto, or, in free English translation, “Caught in the act.”
For all the releases, the musical performance, production, and presentation are of absolute highest quality. Evanthore Vestergaard, October 16.- 2025
