It’s a bit nerdy, but it’s guaranteed to bring joy
Everything suggests that these piano versions, which Carl Nielsen created for his 3rd symphony among others, haven't been played since the composer passed away.
Carl Nielsen’s Sinfonia espansiva for two pianos probably hasn’t been performed since he played it himself in the 1910s, and it has never been recorded before. Now, it has been made accessible to the whole world by two of Denmark’s best pianists.

In the old days, composers had to rework their large orchestral pieces so they could be played on the piano, especially if they wanted to promote the music to foreign conductors who might consider performing it.
Carl Nielsen was eager to get his music out into the world, so he made a piano arrangement of his 3rd symphony, the well-known Espansiva.
The arrangement requires two pianists. Otherwise, Nielsen couldn’t bring his dynamic orchestral work to life on the black and white keys.
Two of Denmark’s best pianists, Rikke Sandberg and Kristoffer Hyldig, discovered the sheet music, known to very few people, at the Royal Library. And if this all sounds a bit dusty, I have to say, the result of their recording of Nielsen's Sinfonia espansiva sounds completely alive and vibrant.
The music leaps off the page, precise, explosive, waltzing, and tender—and straight into the listener's ear.
They’ve made the music their own. Truly piano music
Nielsen wasn’t much of a pianist, but Sandberg and Hyldig have been meticulous in helping him reach the finish line. The notes have been adjusted, moved, and corrected to align with the symphony’s score. Nielsen would have appreciated this.
And they’ve done more than that. Although the music could be played on a single piano, they’ve opted for two grand pianos, providing the optimal tone colors for the bass and treble.
Everything succeeds. They’ve truly made the music their own turning it into real piano music.
A large symphony in four movements should, of course, be played by a symphony orchestra. But in this recording, the very first ever of Nielsen’s piano version, everything works so well that the details in the music come through clearly and freshly.
As mentioned, Nielsen wasn’t very adept at the piano. But for his opera Saul and David, he personally ensured that there were piano arrangements for four hands of two excerpts, and the energetic opening of the final act has become a fantastic start to the album, where the operatic tones sparkle, shimmer, and shine.
Sandberg and Hyldig have been thorough, caring, and sharp.
At first glance, it seems a bit nerdy. But the result is pure joy.
As recently as last year, new Nielsen piano sheets surfaced when Tivoli cleaned out an old safe in their music archive. The Højby Rifle March, Carl Nielsen’s arrangement of a melody his father wrote, had only survived as quickly scribbled notes.
But Kristoffer Hyldig, who handled all the musical restoration work, also completed the march, which serves as a cheerful conclusion.
Now the world can experience the music that Denmark’s most famous composer himself arranged for four-hand piano, in a luxurious recording marked by care from start to finish. At first glance, it seems a bit nerdy. But the result is pure joy.

Arrangementet kræver to pianister.
Det ville Nielsen have været glad for.
