“Platero y yo” (Platero and I) by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895–1968) is one of the longest, and most beautiful, cycles for the classical guitar. It is based on the prose work of the same title by the Spanish Nobel Prize winner Ramón Jiménez, which, subtitled “Elegía andaluza,” tells the story of the donkey Platero and his master in 138 chapters. Castelnuovo-Tedesco used 28 of these chapters as the basis for his cycle; the texts are usually read by a narrator. In the present version, the pieces are performed without a narrator, in my opinion a good decision, as it allows one to concentrate better on the music. And since the album, wonderfully illustrated by the Danish artist Halfdan Pisket, presents the 28 chapters in full (in English), one can read the texts before or while listening. Niklas Johansen brings the many facets of the work vividly to life with a lean, sensitive, and richly colored performance. An exemplary album musically, graphically, and textually! Burkhard Schäfer
„Platero y yo“ (Platero und ich) von Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895–1968) ist einer der längsten, und schönsten, Zyklen für die klassische Gitarre. Er basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Prosawerk des spanischen Nobelpreisträgers Ramón Jiménez, das, im Untertitel „Elegía andaluza“ genannt, in 138 Kapiteln die Geschichte des Esels Platero und seines Herrn erzählt. Castelnuovo-Tedesco hat 28 Kapitel als Vorlage für seinen Zyklus verwendet, die Texte werden normalerweise von einem Erzähler gelesen. In der vorliegenden Fassung erklingen die Stücke ohne Rezitator – meiner Meinung nach eine gute Entscheidung, da man sich so besser auf die Musik konzentrieren kann. Und da das vom danishen Künstler Halfdan Pisket toll illustrierte Album die 28 Kapitel in voller Länge (auf Englisch) präsentiert, kann man sich die Texte vor dem oder beim Hören zu Gemüte führen. Niklas Johansen bringt die vielen Facetten des Werks mit schlankem, einfühlsamem und farbenreichem Spiel intensiv zum Ausdruck. Ein musikalisch, grafisch, textlich mustergültiges Album!
