Top shelf piano music (Five stars)
The French composer and organist Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was one of the most significant personalities in recent French music. He was strongly interested in nature – especially birdsong – just as Christianity and mysticism came to have a decisive importance for his music.
For the fine record label Our Recordings, the pianist Kristoffer Hyldig has recorded Messiaen's profound piano work Vingt regards sur l'enfant-Jesus (Twenty glances at the child Jesus). Hyldig, born in 1982, studied at the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music with Tove Lønskov and Niklas Sivelöv. He has also taken chamber music lessons with Amalie Malling and participated in master classes with Rolf Hind, Malcolm Martineau, Leif Ove Andsnes, Helmuth Deutsch and others.
He made his debut in autumn 2010 and now regularly performs as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist, among other things, in Danish music associations and at music festivals.
It is so audible that this music is close to his heart (and fingers!), and it is completely understandable that the release has also caused international attention.
This is definitely a CD that many music lovers will enjoy immersing themselves in. And the text booklet is – as usual when it comes to Our Recordings – a great help for this.
